Repair assessments and practical workshop advice
Some jobs need to be assessed before we can confirm whether the work is suitable, especially where an item is heavily worn, damaged, antique, unusually constructed, sentimental, or set with delicate stones.

Where a job requires work outside our own workshop capabilities, we will advise accordingly rather than taking on work that is not suitable for us to complete.

Can jewellery shops outsource high-volume repair work?
Yes, jewellery shops can outsource high-volume repair work to West Country Goldsmiths, provided the work is suitable for our workshop and the right trade arrangement is in place.
Many of our trade clients send batches of jobs rather than individual items. Our workshop is set up to manage multiple repairs, ongoing trade relationships and regular workflow from jewellery businesses that need dependable support.
This may include routine repair work, overflow jobs, batches from retail stores, or regular repairs from jewellers who need additional workshop capacity.
We use structured job management processes to help keep trade work organised, including job notes, images, repair details, batch handling and communication records.

What should jewellers look for in a trade jewellery workshop?
Jewellers should look for a trade jewellery workshop with experienced goldsmiths, clear communication, discreet handling, reliable turnaround times, practical repair advice and the ability to manage work carefully at volume.
West Country Goldsmiths has several experienced goldsmiths working onsite, alongside specialist workshop knowledge and modern repair equipment.
One of our major strengths is our expertise with Lampert PUK welding. Lee, our master goldsmith, is a demonstrator and trainer for the Lampert PUK Welder and has demonstrated the technology internationally, including in Las Vegas, London, Italy and Singapore.
This gives our workshop a strong practical understanding of modern jewellery repair techniques, delicate soldering alternatives, precision welding and specialist bench work.
We also have an onsite watchmaker with around 30 years’ experience, supporting a wide range of watch repairs, pressure testing and work on high-end brands. For jewellery retailers, this can provide useful additional workshop support where watch-related work forms part of the wider customer service offering.

How does outsourcing jewellery repairs to a trade workshop work?
Outsourcing jewellery repairs to a trade workshop usually starts with the jeweller sending details of the work required, followed by assessment, agreed pricing where possible, secure transfer of the item, completion of the work, and return to the trade client.
A typical trade job process is:
-
You contact us with details of the work required.
-
Where helpful, you provide clear photographs and any relevant notes.
-
We confirm whether the job appears suitable for our workshop.
-
Pricing is agreed where possible before work begins.
-
The item is dropped off or sent securely to our Plymouth workshop.
-
Our workshop carries out the agreed repair or assessment.
-
Completed work is returned to you or made ready for collection.
-
You remain the customer-facing business throughout.
For regular trade clients, the process can be adapted depending on the type, volume and frequency of work being sent.

Can jewellery repairs be sent to a trade workshop by post?
Yes, jewellery repairs can be sent to West Country Goldsmiths by secure parcel delivery, as well as being dropped off in person by local trade clients.
Many local trade clients drop off and collect work directly from our workshop in Cattedown, Plymouth. Trade clients elsewhere in the UK commonly send work to us using Royal Mail Special Delivery or another suitable insured service.

Each party is responsible for their own side of the postage process. The trade client is responsible for sending the item to us safely and securely. West Country Goldsmiths then organises the return parcel once the work is complete, with return postage charged on the invoice where applicable.

Responsibility for items passes to West Country Goldsmiths once the item is in our possession. West Country Goldsmiths remains responsible until the item is returned to the trade client or handed back by the agreed method.

How long do outsourced jewellery repairs usually take?
Outsourced jewellery repairs usually take around two weeks for pre-priced trade work, although timescales can vary depending on the type of job, complexity, workshop capacity and whether an estimate is needed.

For standard pre-priced trade work, our typical turnaround time is around two weeks.

Some jobs may take longer depending on complexity, parts, stones, estimates, workshop capacity or the condition of the item. Where a job needs a custom estimate, we aim to provide this as quickly as possible and often much sooner, but more complex estimates may take up to 30 days.

Once an estimate is accepted, the normal repair timescale begins unless another arrangement has been agreed.

Urgent work may be possible on a case-by-case basis, especially for regular or high-volume trade clients, but this should always be discussed before the job is sent.

Do trade jewellery workshops offer price lists for repair work?
Many trade jewellery workshops use agreed pricing or trade price lists for standard repair work, but these are usually shared directly with suitable trade clients rather than published online.

West Country Goldsmiths may offer trade pricing for suitable jewellery businesses, but our trade price list is not published online.

Where possible, prices are agreed in advance of any work commencing. For standard trade repairs, this may be based on agreed trade pricing. For non-standard, complex or unusual work, we may need to provide a custom estimate before the repair can go ahead.
This approach helps keep pricing clear while allowing for jobs that need additional assessment, unusual materials, delicate stones, restoration work, or more complex repair decisions.
Jewellers interested in regular trade work are welcome to contact us to discuss the type and volume of work they are looking to send.

Can a trade jewellery workshop work discreetly for my business?
Yes, a trade jewellery workshop can work discreetly in the background for your business, allowing you to remain the customer-facing jeweller while the workshop supports you with repairs and specialist bench work.

West Country Goldsmiths does not contact your customer directly. All communication remains between West Country Goldsmiths and the trade client. You remain the customer-facing business, and your customer relationship stays with you.

Apart from necessary job paperwork or agreed communication, the West Country Goldsmiths name does not need to appear on individual customer jobs. Our role is to support your workshop and repair offering, not interfere with your customer relationship.

This makes our trade service suitable for jewellers who want reliable workshop support while keeping their own brand and customer experience consistent.

How is customer data handled when jewellery repairs are outsourced?
When jewellery repairs are outsourced, customer data should only be shared where it is necessary for the repair, assessment or trade process.

Where possible, West Country Goldsmiths encourages trade clients to share only the information needed to assess and complete the work. In many cases, this means job details, item descriptions, photographs, repair instructions and reference numbers rather than unnecessary customer personal data.

Some trade clients may choose to send their own workshop packets or paperwork where this is necessary for their internal process. Where personal data is shared, we use appropriate data sharing arrangements with trade partners so that the roles and responsibilities of each party are clear.

West Country Goldsmiths actively uses jewellery repair software to manage trade jobs, repair notes, images, uploads and workshop communication in one organised place. As part of the testing team for Datopia Flow, a separate jewellery repair management platform, we have helped refine how trade partners can send work to us in-app, making job information clearer, more traceable and easier to manage. Trade partners interested in using Datopia Flow can contact us West Country Goldsmiths for a discount code that provides a free trial and discounted rate for our customers.
