Traditional Expertise: Restoring Heirlooms With Torch, Solder… and Serious Skill

When a unique antique silver chalice arrived in two separate pieces, our Plymouth workshop treated it like the heirloom it is. Using traditional torch and solder work, careful alignment, and a steady hand, we brought it back together, seamlessly (we have previously warned you about Dad jokes), preserving the character from bowl to base.

Lee, Master Goldsmith: “Sometimes we get the most unusual antique jewellery pieces in to repair - objects with stories etched into every scratch. The craft is in making the join invisible, the structure sound, and the history shine again. That’s the difference with true antique jewellery repair, you’re restoring memories as much as metal.”

Custom Corner: Why We Use Precision Welders (and When Torch Still Wins)

At the Jewellery Show, London Olympia (31 Aug – 1 Sept), Lee demonstrated on both the Lampert PUK precision micro welder and the LG welder at the Cookson Gold stand — showcasing how we blend traditional craft with modern tools to deliver safer, cleaner, and faster repairs.

Why we love precision pulse-arc welding (Lampert PUK series):

  • Lower heat input & minimal heat-affected zone – far safer around heat-sensitive gemstones and delicate settings.

  • Microscopic accuracy for re-tipping claws, filling pinholes, and joining in tight spots — often with near-invisible joins.

  • Versatility across precious metals (gold, silver, platinum; also stainless and more).

  • Workshop efficiency with features like faster spot-weld sequences and saved presets (PUK 6.1).

  • Cost-effective operation: low argon consumption and maintenance-free design.

Of course, we still reach for torch and solder when a full flowing joint, colour-matched solder seam, or global heat is the smarter choice — that judgement is what you’re really hiring us for.

Lee has demonstrated Lampert technology internationally, including JCK Las Vegas and the Singapore International Jewellery Expo, sharing techniques that keep your repairs cleaner and safer.
