💬 Frequently Asked Questions About Topaz

💎 Is topaz an expensive stone?

Topaz is considered affordable compared to precious gems like sapphire or emerald. However, price depends on colour, size and clarity — with Imperial Topaz (a golden-orange variety) being the most valuable. Blue topaz is popular and offers exceptional beauty at a modest price.

🚫 Who should not wear topaz?

There are no strict rules — topaz is safe and suitable for everyone. Some traditional beliefs suggest avoiding topaz if you have a naturally fiery temperament, as the gem’s energising properties may amplify it, but this is purely folklore.

💰 Why is topaz so cheap?

Blue topaz (London or Swiss) is widely available because it’s usually created by gently enhancing colourless topaz through irradiation and heat treatment — a safe and stable process. This makes it beautiful and affordable, ideal for fine jewellery lovers.

✨ What is so special about topaz?

Topaz is admired for its clarity, brilliance and colour range — from sky blue to pink, golden, and even the rare Imperial orange. It’s also one of the few gemstones available in large, flawless crystals, perfect for bold statement jewellery.

🎨 What is the cheapest colour of topaz?

White (colourless) topaz is the most affordable, often used as a diamond substitute thanks to its bright sparkle. Blue topaz is also attractively priced and remains one of the world’s most popular gemstones.

💍 Is topaz better than diamonds?

While diamonds score a perfect 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, topaz sits around 8, making it durable enough for regular wear. Topaz offers larger size and vibrant colour at a fraction of the cost, making it ideal for those seeking sparkle without breaking the bank.

🌈 What is the rarest colour of topaz?

Imperial Topaz, showing deep golden-orange to pinkish-red hues, is the rarest and most valuable. It’s primarily found in Minas Gerais, Brazil and prized by collectors worldwide.

🔍 How to tell if topaz is real?

Genuine topaz feels cool to the touch, has a high level of clarity, and ranks 8 on the hardness scale (it can scratch glass). Professional jewellers, like us at West Country Goldsmiths, can test and verify authenticity with gemmological equipment.

💸 How much does 1 carat of topaz cost?

Prices vary by type — blue topaz can start from around £10–£30 per carat, while Imperial Topaz may reach £300–£500 per carat or more depending on quality and size.

💙 Which colour of topaz is most desirable?

For everyday wear, London Blue Topaz is the favourite — deep, elegant and striking. Collectors often prize Imperial Topaz for rarity, while Swiss Blue and White Topaz are loved for their brightness and versatility.

🌍 Where is topaz from?

Topaz is found worldwide — major sources include Brazil, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Russia. Blue topaz is often enhanced from natural colourless crystals, while Imperial Topaz occurs naturally in limited deposits.

📌 Expert Tip from our Plymouth workshop: When cared for properly, topaz jewellery can last a lifetime. Store your pieces separately, avoid harsh chemicals, and bring them to our jewellers for an occasional professional clean and check-up.

💎 November Birthstone Spotlight — Topaz Treasures of Plymouth

Topaz Jewellery in Plymouth — November’s Radiant Birthstone As autumn fades into winter, November brings with it the sparkling brilliance of topaz — a gemstone that glows like sunlight caught beneath the sea. Whether it’s the deep ocean tones of London Blue Topaz, the crystal-clear brightness of Swiss Blue, or the elegant shimmer of White Topaz, this month’s birthstone is full of light, clarity and positive energy.

🌊 Plymouth’s Connection — Sea, Sky & Stone

It’s hard to imagine a gem more fitting for Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City. Our maritime heritage has long been tied to the sea’s changing blues — from calm harbour waters to deep Atlantic hues — perfectly mirrored in the colours of topaz. Centuries ago, sailors wore topaz for protection on long voyages, believing it calmed turbulent seas and ensured safe passage home. It’s a story that still resonates here today, where blue topaz jewellery celebrates both our coastal roots and our modern craftsmanship.

💙 Shades of November — London & Swiss Blue Topaz

  • London Blue Topaz: A rich, inky teal reminiscent of deep ocean depths — sophisticated and striking in white or yellow gold.

  • Swiss Blue Topaz: Bright and vibrant, like a clear Plymouth morning after the rain — a perfect gemstone for everyday sparkle.

  • White Topaz: A modern alternative to diamonds, offering elegance and brilliance at an accessible price point.

Each shade captures a different side of our local landscape — from the stormy waves off the Hoe to the crisp blue skies above the Barbican.

✨ Symbolism & Meaning

Topaz has long been associated with strength, clarity, and joy. In ancient lore, it was said to bring calm to the mind and heart, helping its wearer find direction and peace. For those celebrating a November birthday, topaz is the perfect choice — a symbol of warmth and resilience as the year draws to a close.

🔨 Bespoke Casting in Plymouth — Made in Our Workshop

Craftsmanship you can see, right here in Plymouth. Every bespoke ring or pendant we make begins as an idea — and, often, a handful of recycled gold ready to be given new life.

In our workshop, we use both lost-wax and sand casting methods depending on the design. Lost-wax casting starts with a hand-carved or 3D-printed wax model, which is melted away to form the final shape — perfect for custom designs, remodels or intricate detail work.

Sand casting, on the other hand, is a tactile, traditional process that captures the exact form of an existing piece or carved pattern in fine casting sand — ideal for signet rings, textured surfaces and one-off recreations.

The result? A completely unique piece of jewellery, made from your metal or ours, finished and polished by our Plymouth goldsmiths with decades of experience.

Whether you’re redesigning a family heirloom or dreaming up something brand new, we can help you create a bespoke jewellery piece that’s truly yours from start to finish.
